Cref is referred as the father of the internet for his role in the creation of ARPANET for the US Department of Defense as well as TCP/IP protocols with APRA. These were the basic structures of the internet that we use in current times.

He has also served on the US government’s National Science Board for six years.

Vint Cerf is not the only high profile person to have contracted the deadly virus in the US Grammy-winning singer John Prine has been hospitalized for coronavirus, while New York Knicks owner James Dolan too has tested positive.

Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson are among American celebrities who have tested positive for coronavirus.

The US has so far reported 3,173 COVID-19 deaths and more than 1,64,000 cases. Globally, coronavirus cases have crossed the 8 lakh mark and the disease has already registered over 38,000 deaths.

In light of both the novel coronavirus outbreak and the rise of global business needs, the video-conferencing app Zoom has become wildly popular. While there are certainly other video-chat applications out there, Zoom adds in a set of tools, which, combined with the company’s renowned reliability makes it the virtual meeting software to beat.

One of the most notable features of Zoom is just how easy it is to get started. You simply download the software on any device or platform, providing nothing more than your email and a password. Start it up, and you’re presented with four options: New Meeting; Join; Schedule; Share Screen.

Zoom meetings

After you start a new meeting, you’ll be given the option to invite participants. Zoom also makes this simple, as you can either send invites out as a pre-written email, or you can simply ping other Zoom members in your contact list to ask them to join. Alternatively, you are given a unique URL to your meeting, which you can share any way you choose.

Zoom meetings

The Share Screen function works in a similar manner. Simply enter the meeting ID to which you’d like to share your computer’s screen, and the software will do the rest, allowing you to play videos, slideshows or any other content from your computer.

Joining a meeting is as simple as entering the meeting ID you would have been sent in your invite.

Finally, the Schedule feature lets you plan to have a meeting at some point in the future. Click this option and you’ll be able to choose the date and time of the meeting; decide if you want to make it a one-time or recurring meeting; choose whether or not participants will need a password; and enable a waiting room and the ability to join the meeting before the host arrives, if you choose. After that, you simply choose which calendar app you’d like to integrate (such as iCal or Google Calendar) and the software will link up, place it on your calendar and allow you to invite your participants.

Zoom meetings

Once you’re in a meeting, Zoom continues to make things easy. A series of icons along the bottom of the screen gives you the ability to mute your audio, turn off your video, invite additional participants, or record the meeting. Clicking on “Manage Participants” opens a side window where you can mute or unmute participants, set notification preferences for when someone joins the group, and even lock the meeting.

Clicking on the Chat icon opens a dialogue window in the side panel where you can engage in written chat, or where you can share files from sources including Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, Box or your computer.

Zoom meetings

Finally, a “Reactions” icon lets you post either the “thumbs-up” or the “applause” emoji during your meeting to give a silent nod to something you particularly like.

Everything described above comes with Zoom’s free version. It allows up to 100 participants in any one meeting, unlimited one-to-one meetings, and places a 40-minute limit on group meetings. The Pro version, which costs $14.99 per month opens the meeting duration to 24 hours, adds cloud storage for meeting recordings, lets you generate customized meeting IDs and grants more robust control to the meeting host. Stepping up to the Zoom version for small and medium businesses for $19.99 per month provides for meetings with up to 300 participants, a customizable meeting URL, company branding, the ability to have all your meeting notes turned into written transcripts, and more.

But for chatting with friends and family, Zoom’s free version should be more than enough for most users.

Cheap phones sell the most as most people cannot afford to spend $999 or more on a smartphone. The most popular price segment for smartphones is $250-$500 in some countries whereas in countries like India, the average selling price is $159, according to market estimates.

For Apple to cater to a larger audience as it moves its focus from just being a hardware company to also being a services company, it is essential for the company to lock its customers into its garden. To do so, Apple needs to sell cheaper phones and tablets for starters.

In 2016, Apple unveiled the iPhone SE to the world which was a $399 iPhone – a truly affordable phone which was also loved by people who prefer small phones. At the time, the flagship iPhone cost $649 but right now the flagship iPhone starts at $999. It is important that the company cater to the needs of people who buy sub $400 phones as well, if it wants to survive the services war.

Getting the pricing right is very crucial for Apple. The company does not have to worry about the expensive models as Apple enthusiasts and fanboys will buy their latest phones no matter what. However, getting the price right for the budget models by making them attractive to its potential customers is very crucial.

Apple does have a very important weapon: privacy. The company is well renowned for its efforts to keep users’ data safe on their devices by using “state of the art” technologies and techniques. Also, it is one of the reasons as to why iPhones are expensive as the company does not sell data, show ads on the phone, or harvest user data for its own uses.

The iPhone SE 2 which is also being called as the iPhone 9 could launch anytime between 31 March and 5th April, 2020. Pictures of a case made for the new upcoming iPhone SE 2 has leaked from a Best Buy store which makes the news of the phone’s release sound more plausible.

Despite a global lockdown to fight the coronavirus pandemic, tech companies have been continuously launching a number of new products.

Apple did unveil a couple of new products earlier in March, but the iPhone SE 2/ iPhone 9 was missing from the list. However, new reports suggest that the launch of the affordable iPhone is on the cards, and that it could happen as early as 5 April.

Apple is expected to launch a new low-end iPhone with TouchID on 5 April

The upcoming iPhone feature a single-lens rear camera, and thick bezels on the top and bottom. Representative image.

According to MacRumors, the new iPhone is identical to the iPhone 8, but has an A13 chip and features a 4.7-inch display.

The phone will likely feature a single-lens rear camera, and thick bezels on the top and bottom. It will possibly be available in three colour variants.

Apple’s new offering is slated to have a TouchID and to come with either 64 GB or 128 GB storage.

The report mentioned that a source emailed them a photo from a Best Buy employee which featured a case designed for the new 2020 iPhone.

It adds that employees of Best Buy have been asked not to sell the cases until 5 April.

As per the suggestion, the date could mean that the low-cost iPhone would be launched as early as this week, but concrete details are still awaited.

You have a choice to make when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic.

Do you treat this time as an insurmountable threat that pits you against everyone else? This option entails making decisions based solely on protecting yourself and your loved ones: stockpiling supplies regardless of what that leaves for others; continuing to host small gatherings because you’re personally at lower risk; or taking no precautions because the effort seems futile.

Or do you treat the coronavirus as a collective challenge that will require shared sacrifices to achieve a difficult but not impossible goal? That option would mean taking recommended precautions: practicing social distancing, hand-washing and restricting travel. These actions might not be your most desired or convenient path as an individual, but they contribute to the broader social good, reducing the spread of COVID-19.

As a professor of psychology and licensed clinical psychologist who studies how people think differently when they’re anxious, I recognize this global pandemic has all the ingredients to fuel a threat-oriented mindset. The trajectory of the coronavirus is uncertain and unpredictable, the very features that fuel anxiety and threat-processing in the brain.

The way people process threatening events matters a lot for how well they’ll manage this period of uncertainty. Some identification of threat is useful and will mobilize you to action, but a rigid overestimation of threat makes you panic or immobilizes you.

Letting the threat dictate your response

When you perceive a situation as a dire threat, it changes how you process information.

No longer do you consider the pros and cons of your choices evenhandedly, looking at the situation from multiple perspectives. Instead, your attention narrows, selectively focusing on cues that reinforce your sense of danger and vulnerability.

Your interpretations become biased, so that you assume the worst when a situation is ambiguous – as almost all situations are.

And you preferentially remember information that confirms a prior belief that the world is a dangerous place and you don’t measure up.

Why is this a problem? After all, the world really is in the grip of an objectively dangerous pandemic. Paying attention to this threat seems vital for staying safe.

The issue occurs when you believe that your personal resources are insufficient to meet the demands of the situation. If you feel the threat is insurmountable, then you give up. Why try if you’re doomed to fail? And if you feel that your resources – be it food, money, time, energy – are inadequate or threatened, then you have nothing to share with others, and hoard what you can for yourself.

Feeling threatened can make you hyperfocused on monitoring for signs of danger, which can in turn mean consuming terrifying stories about COVID-19 almost nonstop. It’s important to stay informed, but prior research makes clear that people are more prone to mental health problems, like anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, if they don’t limit media exposure. In turn, reading about COVID-19 all the time increases the perception of threat, further fueling the need to monitor for danger signs in a vicious cycle that makes the world seem ever scarier.

Better to conceive a threat as a challenge

It’s better for your mental health to see this time as a collective challenge – one that is extremely difficult but which can be met if everyone works together.

When you size something up as a challenge, it’s easier to rise to the occasion. Instead of withdrawing from the problem, you shift to problem-solving. People with this mindset draw on others to help, and they offer their own support to those in need. Research has shown that working collaboratively and helping others has great mental health benefits for the helper.

Research on cognitive behavior therapy shows that shifting one’s outlook to perceive something as a motivating challenge rather than an insurmountable threat can be a successful way to treat anxiety disorders.

Cognitive therapy promotes questioning your thoughts instead of assuming the first one that pops into your mind is the most helpful. An individual becomes a scientist, weighing the evidence for and against ideas to reach more balanced conclusions. You become an explorer, thinking flexibly to consider new approaches to solving problems. If you sniffle once, you don’t immediately assume you have COVID-19 – you maintain precautions, but also consider whether this month is when your allergies usually act up and see if allergy medicine works.

It would be ludicrous not to acknowledge the real threats the world faces right now, and the disproportionate impact this difficult time has on already marginalized communities. But you need not define this threat as insurmountable and get stuck there. Choose instead to work together – albeit remotely – and accept the coronavirus challenge. The shift from threat to challenge might just make it a little easier to stay home, to close the browser and stop reading about COVID-19 24/7, to wash your hands for a full 20 seconds and to buy just what you need at the store so others can do the same.

It’s unclear whether Apple will release its flagship iPhone 12 this year as the world operations have been badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Whenever the device may release – this year or early next year – multiple reports have suggested that the device will have a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor on the back.

Apple recently renewed the iPad Pro by adding the LiDAR sensor, the ultrawide sensor and some minor changes. The LiDAR sensor helps in improving the augmented reality (AR) apps and in the end, improves the overall experience of such a reality.

iPhone 12 to likely have LiDAR scanner 1iPhone 12 to likely have LiDAR scanner 1

The LiDAR sensor uses light to measure range and will help AR objects stay in place more consistently as it is better at its job than the regular camera sensor and the algorithms that accommodate such features. The experience of using augmented reality apps and features in apps like Instagram, Snapchat (in the future) could be more consistent.

Tech bloggers have reported that the new iPad Pro is able to load AR content more speedily compared to the old iPad Pro. Well, the speed improvements are very likely in milliseconds and right now, not many people use AR apps as they do not offer much at the moment.

Augmented Reality (AR) will definitely play a big role in the future but right now, the technology is just not mature and developers have not figured out any proper use cases yet. Some over the head AR glasses have shown off a future where people will not require TVs as they will be able to project a large TV display using the AR technology.

The future is exciting as companies bring new fresh technologies to their devices. The iPhone 12 will very likely use the LiDAR sensor but that will not be one of the reasons to buy the phone as it will few years before the technology turns more mainstream.

Due to Antarctica’s extreme winter, which includes four months of total darkness, polar explorers endured intense confinement in close quarters for long periods of time.

American pioneer Richard Byrd explained, “little things … have the power to drive even the most disciplined … to the edge of insanity. The ones who survive with a measure of happiness are those who can live profoundly off their intellectual resources, as hibernating animals live off their fat.”

How did the Antarctic explorers of the early 1900s survive tedium in the time long before the internet?

Music

Music was vital to the sanity and welfare of the explorers. “It is necessary to be cut off from civilization … to realize fully the power music has to recall the past…to soothe the present and give hope for the future,” said one of the youngest members of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913).

The Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902-04) included an official bagpiper. Admiral Byrd brought a phonograph to the Advance Base in 1934, calling music his “only real luxury.”

Shackleton’s ship Endurance, slowly being crushed by an ice floe in 1915. Frank Hurley/Wikimedia

When abandoning the slowly sinking ship Endurance, Ernest Shackleton’s men were allowed to carry only two pounds of personal effects. But Shackleton insisted that meteorologist Leonard Hussey take his six-pound banjo along, saying, “It’s vital mental medicine, and we shall need it.”

Reading

Books played an huge role in the lives of polar explorers. The library aboard Endurance included plays, poetry, books on exploration, the Encyclopedia Britannica and novels like “The Brothers Karamazov.” When the ship went down, Shackleton rescued a Rudyard Kipling poem. He tore the first page out of a bible given to him by Queen Alexandra, abandoning the rest of the heavy text, though a crew member secretly saved it.

Poetry, one explorer explained, “was useful, because it gave one something to learn by heart and repeat during the blank hour … when the idle mind is all too apt to think … of purely imaginary grievances.”

Some men even attempted to learn a language. Roald Amundsen, the leader of the Norwegian Fram Expedition (1910-1914), studied Russian grammar. While others quickly finished their lighter stories, Amundsen’s reading “had the advantage of being incomparably stiffer. Russian verbs are uncommonly difficult of digestion, and not to be swallowed in a hurry.”

Diary writing

Daily diaries were extremely common among polar explorers. First, men were aware accounts of their experiences could have monetary value in the future. Second, diaries served as records and keepsakes for their families. Third, as many days tended to run together, diaries became a way to differentiate one day from another. Finally, as one explorer explained, “A diary in this life is one of the only ways in which a man can blow off steam.”

Expedition newspapers

There is a long tradition of polar explorers creating newspapers for themselves. Reports on the weather or accounts of visits to penguin colonies were interspersed with short stories, poetry, interviews, crossword puzzles and word games. They were illustrated with both humorous and artistic drawings. Over time, these texts took on a great deal of sexual content, including lewd jokes and fantasies.

As one explorer explained, “The importance of not allowing any sense of depression to become a part of the atmosphere of our life was clear to all.”

Games

Carsten Borchgrevink, the leader of the Southern Cross Expedition (1898-1900) said, “The sameness of those cold, dark nights attacks the minds of men like a sneaking evil spirit. We found that … playing chess and cards were very valuable pastimes.” Sometimes men “shouted and jumped during their game and it is a wonder they did not upset the little board on which they played.”

Chess was also king on the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). According to Robert Falcon Scott, “Our most popular game for evening recreation is chess; so many players have developed that our two sets of chessmen are inadequate.”

Food

For Antarctic explorers, almost all food was dried or consumed from tins. Hoosh, a stew made from a mix of dried meat and fat, called pemmican, thickened with cereal, provided many of the calories of the earliest expeditions.

To break up the monotonous cuisine, men experimented with new foods, such as penguin or seal meat. In a few cases, such as the Fram expedition and the Imperial Trans-Antarctic expedition, they even ate their dogs.

The often lackluster fare meant the men were often obsessed with food. Many of their conversations revolved around their ideal meals from home. In 1934, Byrd wrote in his diary, “I found the cook book! … The whoop of joy I uttered sounded so loud that I was actually embarrassed. … No book washed ashore to a castaway could have been more avidly studied.”

Alcohol

Polar expeditions were usually very well stocked with beer, wine and spirits.

There was debate over the value of alcohol on these expeditions – no one wanted to encourage drunkenness and alcohol could be dangerous in the field. But Amundsen, the first man to the South Pole, felt differently: “An occasional glass of wine or a tot of spirits were things that we all, without exception, were very glad of. … Personally, I regard alcohol, used in moderation, as a medicine in the Polar regions. … Two men who have fallen out a little in the course of the week are reconciled at once by the scent of rum.”

Brains or brawn?

So what kind of man survived the best under severe isolation? According to Apsley Cherry-Garrard of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), “The men with the greatest store of nervous energy came best through this expedition … their strength of mind triumphed over their weakness of body. If you want a good polar traveler, get a man without too much muscle … and let his mind be on wires—of steel.”

The most obvious feature which iFixit saw in this model was the latest LiDAR scanner. The scanner can measure the distance of five meters of the surrounding objects. It also gives the users a new and enhanced augmented reality experience.

The video also confirmed that the iPad Pro has the new A12Z Bionic chip. It contains the 8-core GPU. It also has an enhanced thermal architecture. There are several new performance controllers in the iPad Pro 2020. The iPad Pro has a 6GB RAM. The previous models were only 4GB.

The video also shows that the iPad Pro 2020 has a modular USB C Port. The model has the adhesive that holds everything together which makes it difficult to repair the iPad Pro.

iFixit gives a score of 3 out of 10 for the repairability of this new model. It does not have flexible repairing options. The customers can purchase the new iPad Pro 2020 starting from $799.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s COVID-19 count reached 170 on Monday with 47 people testing positive for the novel coronavirus, officials said.

While 29 of the new infections are in Mumbai, the rest 18 are from other parts of MMR, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials said.

Also, an 80-year-old man, who suffered from acute respiratory distress, succumbed to COVID-19 at a private hospital here, taking the death toll in MMR to eight, including six in Mumbai, said the civic body’s release.

He was a known case of hypertension and ischemic heart disease, and had tested positive for COVID-19 on March 29, the release added.

The sprawling region consists of Mumbai city and parts of adjoining districts of Thane, Raigad and Palghar.

The release said on Monday, 206 people were checked at OPDs in the metropolis and 61 people admitted for suspected exposure.

One COVID-19 patient was discharged after recovery, taking the number of such persons in MMR to 15, the BMC release said.

“There were 18 new cases detected during tests conducted between 24-28 March. As these 18 cases are included in the list today, there appears to be a rise in cases. It is mainly due to vigorous contact tracing by the health teams and enhanced testing in public and private labs,” the release said.

The civic body said, as a containment measure, its teams and police had surveyed areas where COVID-19 patients reside, including 1 lakh houses and 3.87 lakh people.

Brian Hagiwara/The Image Bank via Getty Images

Joe McDonald/The Image Bank via Getty Images

The lockdown, due to Coronavirus Outbreak, has exploded Houseparty‘s popularity. Houseparty not only lets you video call up to eight people at a time but the fun part is that it also lets you play games like Pictionary, Trivia, and others while you are on call.

However, the app asks for all kinds of app permissions when you first log in. It takes enough access from you to notify you when someone from your contacts joins Houseparty and every time they log in to the app. The app also takes permission to access your locations. Most people tend to allow access to most things when they first create the account. But, if the constant notifications now irk you too, here are a few ways to use the app more privately:

How to use the Houseparty app privately

Houseparty app can help you video call up to eight people at a time.

How to video call privately on Houseparty

Step 1: Open Houseparty app and tap on the face emoji icon placed in the top left corner

Step 2: Tap on the Settings icon on the top left corner

Step 3: Turn on the toggle for private mode

Now all your chats will be held privately and even you are alone in the app, you can decide who you want to video call with and no friend can add themselves in the video call. “The room is locked” is what the app calls it.

You can also turn off the toggle for “send out my notifications” and “get my friends notification” for more privacy otherwise it will notify your friends every time you start using the app.

As we practice social distancing, our embrace of social media gets only tighter. The major social media platforms have emerged as the critical information purveyors for influencing the choices people make during the expanding pandemic. There’s also reason for worry: the World Health Organization is concerned about an “infodemic,” a glut of accurate and inaccurate information about COVID-19.

The social media companies have been pilloried in recent years for practicing “surveillance capitalism” and being a societal menace. The pandemic could be their moment of redemption. How are they rising to this challenge?

Surprisingly, Facebook, which had earned the reputation of being the least trusted tech company in recent years, has led with the strongest, most consistent actions during the unfolding COVID-19 crisis. Twitter and Google-owned YouTube have taken steps as well to stem the tide of misinformation. Yet, all three could do better.

As an economist who tracks digital technology’s use worldwide at The Fletcher School at Tufts University, I’ve identified three important ways to evaluate the companies’ responses to the pandemic. Are they informing while simultaneously curtailing misinformation? Are they enforcing responsible advertising policies? And are they providing helpful data to public health authorities without compromising privacy?

Tackling the infodemic

Social media companies can block, demote or elevate posts. According to Facebook, the average user sees only 10% of their News Feed and the platforms determine what users see by reordering how stories appear. This means demoting and elevating posts could be as essential as blocking them outright.

Blocking is the most difficult decision because it bumps up against First Amendment rights. Facebook, in particular, has recently been criticized for its unwillingness to block false political ads. But Facebook has had the most clear-cut policy on COVID-19 misinformation. It relies on third-party fact-checkers and health authorities flagging problematic content, and removes posts that fail the tests. It also blocks or restricts hashtags that spread misinformation on its sister platform, Instagram.

Twitter and YouTube have taken less decisive positions. Twitter says it has acted to protect against malicious behaviors. Del Harvey, Twitter’s vice president of trust and safety, told Axios that the company will “remove any pockets of smaller coordinated attempts to distort or inorganically influence the conversation.” YouTube removes videos claiming to prevent infections. However, neither company has a transparent blocking policy founded on solid fact-checking.

While all three platforms are demoting problematic content and elevating content from authoritative sources, the absence of consistent fact-checking standards has created a gray area where misinformation can slip through, particularly for Twitter. Panic-producing tweets claimed prematurely that New York was under lockdown, and bots or fake accounts have slipped in rumors.

Even the principle of deferring to authoritative sources can cause problems. For example, the widely read @realDonaldTrump has tweeted misinformation. Influential figures who are not officially designated authoritative sources have also managed to circulate misinformation. Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, tweeted a false assertion about the coronavirus to 32 million followers and Twitter has declined to remove his tweet. John McAfee, founder of the eponymous security solutions company, also tweeted a false assertion about the coronavirus. That tweet was removed but not before it had been widely shared.

Harnessing influence for good

Besides blocking and re-ordering posts, the social media companies must also ask how people are experiencing their platforms and interpreting the information they encounter there. Social media platforms are meticulously designed to anticipate the user’s experience, hold their attention and influence actions. It’s essential that the companies apply similar techniques to influence positive behavior in response to COVID-19.

Consider some examples across each of the three platforms of failing to influence positive behaviors by ignoring the user experience.

For Facebook users, private messaging is, increasingly, a key source of social influence and information about the coronavirus. Because these groups often bring together more trusted networks – family, friends, classmates – there is a greater risk that people will turn to them during anxious times and become susceptible to misinformation. Facebook-owned Messenger and WhatsApp – both closed platforms in contrast to Twitter – are of particular concern since the company’s ability to monitor content on these platforms is still limited.

For Twitter, it’s essential to track “influencers,” or people with many followers. Content shared by these users has greater impact and ought to pass through additional filters.

YouTube has taken the approach of pairing misleading coronavirus content with a link to an alternative authoritative source, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or World Health Organization. This juxtaposition can have the opposite of the intended effect. A video from a non-authoritative individual appears with the CDC or WHO logo beneath it, which could unintentionally give viewers the impression that those public health authorities have approved the videos.

Responsible advertising

There is money to be made from ads offering products related to the outbreak. However, some of those ads are not in the public interest. Facebook set a standard by banning ads for medical face masks and Google followed suit, as did Twitter.

Social media companies are giving the CDC and WHO free advertising to promote coronavirus-related messages like this WHO Facebook post. World Health Organization, CC BY-NC

All three companies have offered free ads to appropriate public health and nonprofit organizations. Facebook has offered unlimited ads to the WHO, while Google has made a similar but less open-ended offer and Twitter offers Ads for Good credits to fact-checking nonprofit organizations and health information disseminators.

There have been some policy reversals. YouTube initially blocked ads meant to profit from content related to COVID-19, but then allowed some ads that follow the company’s guidelines.

Overall, the companies have responded to the crisis, but their policies on ads vary, have changed and have left loopholes: Users could still see ads for face masks served by Google even after it had officially banned them. Clearer industry-wide principles and firm policies can help keep businesses and people from exploiting the outbreak for commercial gain.

Data to track the outbreak

Social media can be a source of essential data for mapping the spread of the disease and managing it. The key is that the companies protect user privacy, recognize the limits of data analysis and not oversell it. Geographic information systems that build on data from social media and other sources have already become key to mapping the worldwide spread of COVID-19. Facebook is collaborating with researchers at Harvard and National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan by sharing data about people’s movements – stripped of identifying information – and high-resolution population density maps.

Search and location data on YouTube and its parent, Google, are invaluable trend-trackers. Google hasn’t offered its trends analyses for COVID-19 in any systematic manner to date, perhaps out of reluctance because of the failure of an earlier Google Trends program that attempted to predict the paths of transmission of influenza and completely missed the peak of the 2013 flu season.

Think with Google, the company’s current data analytics service for marketers, offers a powerful example of insights that can be gleaned from Google’s data. It could help with projects for contact tracing and social distancing compliance, provided it’s done in a way that respects user privacy. For example, as users’ locations are tagged along with their posts, the people they’ve met and the places they’ve been can help determine whether people on the whole or in a location are complying with public health safety orders and guidelines.

Moreover, data shared by companies – stripped of identifying information – could be used by independent researchers. For example, researchers could use Facebook-owned Instagram and CrowdTangle to correlate travelers’ movements to COVID-19 hotspots with user conversations to locate sources of transmission. Research teams I direct have been analyzing coronavirus-related Twitter hashtags to identify the primary misinformation sources to detect patterns.

The expanding footprint of the pandemic and its consequences are evolving quickly. To their credit, the social media companies have attempted to respond quickly as well. Yet, they can do more. This could be their time to rebuild trust with the public and with regulators, but the window to make the right choices is narrow. Their own futures and the futures of millions may depend on it.

Scientists are now testing the efficacy of urine in helping astronauts build some of the world’s first moon bases.

According to a study published in the scientific publication Journal of Cleaner Production, urea in astronaut’s pee could be used as an additive in making concrete for structures to be built on the moon.

Astronaut pee can be used in the construction of structures on the moon: Report

The researchers said that space agencies are trying to figure out ways to use raw materials from the moon’s surface, or even those that astronauts can provide, in helping them build the structures.

Researchers from the Polytechnic University of Cartegena in Spain said transporting 0.45 kg of material from Earth would cost about $10,000 and thus the construction of anything on the moon would be extremely expensive.

However, the researchers said that space agencies are trying to figure out ways to use raw materials from the moon’s surface, or even those that astronauts can provide, in helping them build the structures. Urine is one such raw material.

The study looked into whether urea from urine can be used as an additive that can be incorporated into concrete to soften the mixture and make it more pliable.

“Since urea is the second most abundant component in urine (after water), it is readily available anywhere there are humans. We have therefore explored the possibility of utilising urea as a chemical admixture for lunar geopolymers,” said the study.

Samples containing urea or naphthalene-based superplasticisers could bear heavy weights shortly after mixing, while keeping an almost stable shape.

As per an article in New Atlas, Anna-Lena Kjoniksen of Norway, who was one of the authors of the study, said that they have not yet investigated how urea would be extracted from urine, or if the water in urine could be used for the mixture with materials obtained on the moon, or a combination of both.

What if there was a way to get any alert, notification or message read no matter the recipient phone’s status?

It can be truly useful in both business and
personal aspects.

We review an app called NeedUNow, one of the
latest contact tools you can download today.

Table of Contents

Downloading and Installing

The process is the same for the iPhone and Android mobiles- head to your respective app store and download NeedUNow. Then, sync your contacts and set who you want to alert.

NeedUNow in Action

The messaging app works quite well on the
iPhone. The developers mention there won’t be any discrepancy or lag even if
you send an emergency message to an Android phone from your iPhone, and vice
versa. We like how the app itself is fast and there’s absolutely zero clutter.

NeedUNow works better than expected- it can
override Silent modes on smartphones and there isn’t any lag in communication,
either. We tried sending an alert to another device halfway across the state
and the recipient got it in less than a minute. More importantly, the mobile
had an audible sound even when he had it in Silent and Do Not Disturb.

The app is snappy and doesn’t lag even on low-end phones, which can be a bonus for those who have aged folks. If your parents are still using devices from 5 or 7 years ago, you’re in luck- NeedUNow works on older operating systems and even ones that have 512mb memory.

NeedUNow Benefits

The app shines in instances where it’s
absolutely necessary for messages to be read by the recipient.

NeedUNow can easily bypass most ‘do not
disturb’ protocols so your spouse, loved ones or employees will be alerted to
any important messages and still enjoy a device that doesn’t call for your
attention every 5 minutes.

It guarantees peace of mind knowing your family members will be alerted to a time-sensitive event such as an accident or emergency, for example.

Why You Should Download NeedUNow Today

We recommend you trying NeedUNow, especially if emergency contacts are a part of you or a family member’s everyday life. The app size is relatively lightweight and won’t impose a toll on your device, making it the perfect communication app that can get you in touch when you need it most.

Since the Coronavirus Outbreak has forced millions of people around the world to be on lockdown, social media apps and messenger are now the only way to stay in touch for most people. WhatsApp being one of the most popular messengers around the world, it continues to be one of the most common platforms of communication.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp has limited the duration of uploading videos on WhatsApp status to 15 seconds. We tried to upload longer videos via both Andriod and iOS devices, but it cut the video after 15 seconds. WhatsApp hasn’t announced this feature yet but it was first spotted by WABetaInfo. Earlier, this limit was just double- 30 seconds.

The report suspects that the video limit may have been reduced due to server overload.

Although, there is still no limit as to how many videos you can upload on the WhatsApp status so you can still upload a long video by chopping it by 15 seconds.

WHO (+41 79 893 1892) and the Ministry of Health of India (+ 91 90 1315 1515) have rolled out two helpline numbers each on WhatsApp for all users in India so that they are well-informed about COVID-19. You simply have to send a “Hi” on these numbers and you can get answers to your queries in the form of infographics, YouTube links or texts, depends on the type of question you have.

Apple unveiled the iPad Pro to the world a few days ago. While it’s not a major revamp, it’s an appreciated upgrade over the previous generation model as it brings some interesting new features to the table.

The iPad Pro 2020 offers two cameras on the back – the usual wide and the new ultrawide from the current generation flagship iPhones. While not a lot of people click pictures using their iPad, it’s a welcome addition as it’s good to know that there are options available just in case if required.

New iPad Pro does not use Apple's latest chips 2New iPad Pro does not use Apple's latest chips 2

The new iPad Pro also uses a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor to improve the experience of apps that take advantage of augmented reality (AR) technology by providing a more precise map of the real world. The addition of the new sensor will promise a more cohesive experience, especially in the future as more and more developers build augmented reality (AR) apps.

All the new features on the iPad Pro are great but there has been some controversial talk regarding some of the new upgrades. To be specific, the 2020 iPad Pro uses an A12Z chip whereas the 2019 iPad Pro used the A12X chip. Well, what is the problem? The thing is Apple already released the A13 Bionic chip to be used with the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro series, so why isn’t Apple bringing the same over to the iPad Pro is a question that is being thrown around.

It has been noted by TechInsights  that the A12X and the A12Z chips are not that different from each other. The A12Z chip has eight GPU cores whereas the A12X chip has seven GPU cores. However, it has been reported that, both the chips are in fact the same but on the A12X, one GPU core was disabled.

Well, we do not know why Apple would do such a thing? Maybe for thermal issues.

CD Projekt RED, developers of popular game The Witcher and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, have donated $950,000 in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

As per a report in Android Central, the developer revealed how the company was staying updated during the whole pandemic situation, adding that the world is seeing a daily increase in cases and that there’s a rising need for every possible help.

CD Projekt RED states that since they are not “familiar” with buying masks or medical equipment, they will be cooperating with “professionals with many years of experience”, namely WOSP.

WOSP is the biggest nonprofit organization in Poland that works for the healthcare system of children and elders.

CD Projekt RED revealed they have donated PLN 4 million or roughly $950,000 to WOSP to fight coronavirus.

The game developers have asked everyone to stay at home so that health workers who have been relentlessly fighting the virus can be honoured.

For now, the release of their highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 game in September 2020 is on track.

Apple’s butterfly keyboard is a failed project and its life is almost about to end. The company released a 16 inch MacBook Pro to replace the 15 inch MacBook Pro and in the process also added a better scissor switch keyboard. Also, the MacBook Air has been refreshed to use the new scissor switch keyboard.

The MacBook Pro 13” though on the other hand still uses the troubled butterfly keyboard mechanism. It was initially reported that Apple would release a 14” MacBook Pro to replace the 13” MacBook Pro and in the process, also add the scissor switch keyboard in March. However, there was no word about the MacBook Pro but instead the company released the MacBook Air.

The new MacBook Air is great as it offers more base storage, starts at a lower price, uses a scissor switch keyboard, and also offers quad-core CPU customizations. However, the 13” MacBook Pro has some advantages over the MacBook Air as it has a much more forgiving airflow design.

13" MacBook Pro needs the new keyboard 113" MacBook Pro needs the new keyboard 1

The MacBook Air’s body features a wedge shaped design which does not allow for proper cooling when running power intensive tasks. Some tech reviewers have said that the new 2020 MacBook Air can handle 4K video editing and some pretty performance hungry apps but also added that the machine will get hot almost instantly.

Also, a lot of people, including me, prefer the design of the MacBook Pro over the MacBook Pro – boxy and looks sturdy overall. Apple last updated the 13” MacBook Pro in July of 2019 when it ditched the MacBook Pro without TouchBar and added a proper quad-core processor to the base model.

13” MacBook Pro with scissor switch keyboard and also without TouchBar is the need of the hour. A lot of people have been hanging onto their old 2015 era MacBook Pros to avoid dealing with butterfly keyboard and TouchBar issues.

iPhone 11 brought some really new features to the table – an ultrawide camera, improved camera performance, and ofcourse cheaper pricing options. The iPhone XR proved to be one of the most popular phones in the market as it was cheaper than the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max.

Apple has not been that great at bringing all new technological advancements to its phones quickly but in some cases it’s the first. For example, the iPhone 11 still ships with a 5W adapter when even wireless chargers offer a better wattage – quick charging speeds. However, on the other hand, the iPhone 11 also does offer better facial recognition technology.

The iPhone 11 is a great phone for the price, well it may not offer a pixel dense display but it’s great. One quality that made people considering buying the iPhone XS, choose instead the iPhone XR was the battery. The iPhone XR offers extremely good battery backup as it uses a sub 1080p display, does not use 3D Touch, and packs a large battery.

Should you buy the iPhone 11? 1Should you buy the iPhone 11? 1

To continue the trend, Apple has not changed much in the battery department and the display department of the iPhone 11. The iPhone 11 still offers that phenomenal battery backup just like the iPhone XR; to be more precise, the battery life on the iPhone 11 could actually be even better by a small percentage.

The iPhone 11 supports Night Mode for taking pictures even in low-light conditions. It was Google that first introduced such a feature as night photography but since then, Apple has taken measures to beat Google at its own game. In some cases, pictures clicked using the iPhone 11 at night are actually better than Google’s Pixel phones.

The iPhone 11 starts at $699 (64GB base model) and it’s a solid phone which will last for years to come if that’s what you are looking for. The cameras on the phone are excellent and the battery is phenomenal.
