At Least 4 Dead in Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting

.

Officials in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, say at least four people are dead after a shooter, now in custody, opened fire Saturday at a Jewish synagogue.

More people are injured. A spokesman for the Pittsburgh police department, Chris Togneri, said three officers have been shot. Another police official, Commander Jason Lando, told reporters there are “multiple casualties.”

Police say a while male suspect has surrendered to a SWAT team responding to the incident.

An official at The Tree of Life Synagogue said Shabbat services were taking place when the gunman entered the building midmorning Saturday.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf issued a statement calling the shooting “an absolute tragedy.” He said he has spoken with local leaders and will provide resources to help law enforcement and first responders with the crisis.

“These senseless acts of violence are not who we are as Americans,” he said.

U.S. President Donald Trump spoke to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland shortly after the shooting. He expressed regret and said the U.S. should stiffen its laws in terms of the death penalty. He said people who commit such crimes “should really suffer the ultimate price.” He also suggested the shooting might have been prevented if there had been an armed guard inside.
