December 2018

Tonight’s 31 December the world will celebrate as 2018 passes and we enter 2019. As we experience mixed feelings of both happiness and hopefulness for the coming year, and nostalgia looking back at all that happened in the past year, even Google has sent us a friendly reminder with a Doodle of two playful baby elephants partying, and waiting for the clock to strike 12 am.

A Google Doodle is essentially a special version of the Google logo that appears on the homepage commemorating holidays, events, people and more.

The baby elephant on the left is seen blowing balloons while the one on the right enjoys popcorn. A clock on the top is just about to hit midnight.

Describing the Doodle, Googl writes, “A mammoth pile of balloons? Check. A ton of party hats? Check. A herd of friends and family ready to countdown? Check. Let the New Year’s Eve festivities commence! At the stroke of midnight, it’s out with the old and in with the new. We’ll sing that song “Should old acquaintance be forgot,” but there’s no need to worry about our purple friends. Elephants never forget.”

To see the Google Doodle’s from the past years, head here.

Happy New Year’s Eve!

According to Priyadarshi Mohapatra, country general manager, Consumer & Devices, Microsoft India, the device has a clear edge over its rivals in the market when it comes to a laptop or a near-desktop experience with a 2-in-1 device.

Microsoft Surface Go laptop specifications and features

While the Black Type Cover will set you back by Rs 8,699, the coloured covers are priced a notch higher at Rs 11,799.

Featuring a 10-inch display, the Surface Go comes in at the same size as the iPad Pro. According to details listed in a blog post by Microsoft, the Go is also far lighter than current Surface series laptops with a weight of around 500 g is also adequately thin at 8.3 mm to be the perfect travel companion.

Microsoft says that the Surface Go comes with a factory calibrated 3:2 PixelSense display that supports the Surface Pen.

While those are the pros of the Surface Go, you do get a far less capable Intel Pentium processors that are also less battery efficient. While Microsoft is of the opinion that this will not affect user experience given one stick to regular tasks like browsing, consuming media and using light productivity apps, users still do have to shell out more for an optional keyboard or mouse.

For the first time on a Surface laptop, the Surface Go will use the USB-C charging standard which is a welcome addition for those who do not like to carry around too many cables.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Friday gave time till January 31 for consumers to select channels of their choice under the new framework for broadcasting and cable services and said all existing packs of subscribers will continue uninterrupted till then.

The TRAI, in March, 2017, had notified the new regulatory framework for Broadcasting and Cable services and re-notified it on July 3, 2018, prescribing the implementation schedule. According to the implementation schedule, all the service providers were required to complete the preparation for migration to new framework by December 28, 2018, as the new framework will come into force the next day.

In order to facilitate all service providers to migrate their subscribers from old to new framework without causing inconvenience, TRAI, after consultations with broadcasters, DTH operators, and MSOs (multi-system operators), has given them more time to seek options from subscribers for smooth and interruption-free migrations.

“All existing packs/plans/bouquets to the subscribers will continue uninterrupted till January 31, 2019. No service provider to disconnect any signal or feed to any MSO/LCO (local cable operator)/subscriber till January 2019,” TRAI said in a statement.

Distribution platform operators (DPOs) will devise their own mechanism to reach out to all the subscribers and seek options from subscribers, it said. DPOs need to migrate all the subscribers to new framework with effect from February 1, 2019, it said.

In order to have a smooth implementation of the new regulatory framework that will come into effect Saturday, TRAI held a series of meetings and consultations with all the stakeholders including Consumers Advocacy Groups (CAG) during last 4-6 weeks, the statement said. It was noted during those discussions that to make the consumers aware about the new framework and the process of seeking fresh choice of TV channels from about 150 million subscribers would require some time and resources of the service providers.

“Subsequently, the Authority (TRAI) also held meetings on December 19 and December 27 with various service providers of the broadcasting and cable services sector. The preparedness for migration of all subscribers from old to new framework was also assessed,” TRAI said.

The Telecom regulator said the issue of smooth migration from the old to new regulatory framework was specifically discussed and it emerged that, by and large, most stakeholders are ready for implementation of the new regulatory framework. TRAI said DPOs shall declare the Distributor Retail Price (DRP) and Network Capacity Fee (NCF) by December 29.

The government had said on Thursday that the new regulatory framework for broadcasting and cable services will provide “freedom of choice” and give consumers “direct control” on their monthly bill for television services.

U.S. officials and at least one state said Friday that they have started investigations into a nationwide CenturyLink internet outage that has disrupted 911 service.

Representational image.

Representational image.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai called the outage that began Thursday “completely unacceptable” because people who need help couldn’t use the emergency number.

“Its breadth and duration are particularly troubling,” he said.

The commission’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau will investigate the cause and effect of the outage, he said.

The Monroe, Louisiana-based telecommunications giant is one of the largest in the United States. It offers communications and information technology services in dozens of states. Customers from New York to California reported outages.

CenturyLink spokeswoman Debra Peterson said the outage “is not related to hacking,” but she declined further comment.

The company said on Twitter that it’s working to restore service and appears to be making progress. It hasn’t provided a cause for the problems.

“Where CenturyLink is the 911 service provider 911 calls are completing,” the company said in a tweet.

Regulators in Washington state also said they were opening an investigation into an outage of its statewide 911 service.

The state Utilities and Transportation Commission said interruptions began about 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The commission’s regulatory services division director, Mark Vasconi, said the system appeared stable Friday but the agency was monitoring it.

In Idaho, Emergency Office Management Director Brad Richy said he didn’t receive any reports of 911 service failures, but some state agencies, including the state Department of Correction, lost service on internet-based phones.

Some businesses in Idaho also lost the ability to make credit card sales, and some ATM machines weren’t working in Idaho and Montana.

Due to sporadic 911 outages in Massachusetts, public safety officials recommended individuals looking for emergency help use the 10-digit telephone number of the fire or police departments they wanted to contact.

In Greeley, Colorado, the Weld County Regional Communication Center on Friday said 911 calls were being dropped, but callers should keep trying and emergency dispatchers would try to call back.

The 911 dispatch center and emergency management in western Missouri’s Johnson County were hit by the outage, county Emergency Management Director Troy Armstrong said Friday. He said the 911 lines were not affected, but the internet was down at the dispatch center and phone services also were spotty.

When you’re Apple your products will make big news. The iPhone is perhaps the most structurally engineered smartphone on the planet but every now and then one device may set of alarms. A news report has emerged which has claimed that three weeks old iPhone XS Max spontaneously exploded causing injuries to the owner.

An Ohio resident who was the owner of this iPhone XS Max is reportedly suing Apple for personal damages as per Phonearena. Josh Hillard says that the handset was in his trousers when it started discharge “a large amount of heat”, as well as green and yellow coloured smoke.

Hillard’s trousers caught fire and he had to find a private place to remove them by which time the fire had engulfed the phone. Josh also  is also unhappy about the large amount of smoke he inhaled “from the time of first noticing the fire and between removal of the pants and taking the phone out of my pocket and placing it outside.”

At this point, there is no information on what exactly caused this unfortunate incident and we can be sure that Apple will thoroughly examine all claims to avoid being sued at all.

How To Grow your Facebook Page Engagement

There are the couple of ways to increase the Facebook page engagement, recently it was conducted a survey from the creative group that most of the marketing executives suggested that companies should increase the investment in Facebook because millions of people across the world use the social media Facebook.

In Facebook, basically people upload a link or a photo the second people who are in the friend list those friends like the link or the photo or they comment on it, the same way the companies wants the response to market on the Facebook.
Most of the business people who are not happy with the results after they keep on updating in the project those people give up in the end. There are few ways to increase the Facebook engagement page and that is advertisers should create relevant and personal too.

Organise Survey To Ask Questions

Companies or advertisers should think in a how users see any brands and they need. An easier way is to organise a survey asking regarding the needs to be added so that the brand gets a good result.
The best way is asking questions are a way to spark dialogue with fans. It is the easiest way and the best method to get to know what should be improved and gets a good response on the brand. Even timing is most important to post or update on any social networks. Because people are not using social networks all day some are running for work so post posting a advertise after work is good and might get the good response.

Facebook Page Marketing

While advertising 1 thing should keep in mind and that is Facebook users usually gets attracted to the pictures or photos of the brand and reply or comment it. One thing that most business owners and marketers doesn’t do is not having the call of action while they update the post. Facebook users usually see the wall posts, what you can always do to increase the page engagement to promote it by using page post story ads which help a lot the business owners and marketers.

Post Images and Video

By posting images on your Facebook Pages, it would help to get more engagements in the feed.If you have Business Page then you can post your company and employees pics to get more promotion.
Create Video post for your Page. The video posting is more engagement than others.

Indians see life insurance as the handiest instrument for planning their major life goals while nearly a third do not have any idea about how much insurance they need, a survey has found.

Insurance.

Insurance.

Life insurance is the top instrument for life goals such as building a house (43 per cent), children’s education (38 per cent), retirement (49 per cent) and legacy creation (50 per cent), the survey by Exide Life Insurance said.

When it comes to planning for child’s marriage, they look at fixed deposits in addition to life insurance, the survey revealed.

It also finds that 30 percent respondents admitted that they do not have any idea about how much life insurance cover is required, pointing towards the glaring protection gap among Indians.

Around 46 percent of surveyed feel that they should have a cover of at least 10 times their annual income but only 29 per cent of individuals have such cover, it said.

The digital survey ‘Exide Life Insurance 2018 Money Habits’ covered respondents from 12 cities including metros and emerging tier II cities with an intention to understand how life insurance owners/intenders look at dealing with their money.

Through the various subsections of the survey, it is made evident that Indians seldom cover the entirety of financial responsibility. Survey brings to light that as an income earner of the family, Indians are inclined towards just earning, saving and to an extent investing for life goals, the survey said.

Life insurance penetration in India stands at less than 3 per cent in comparison to other developing countries and despite the thrust on financial literacy by government as well as the insurance industry, people still struggle to gauge the level of protection required to themselves and their family, it said.

Finding ways to hide information in text, unveiling state-sponsored trolls, a plane with no moving parts, wood as strong as titanium and even efforts to go beyond the corporeal to life beyond death… there was seemingly no end to tech innovations in 2018.

It was a year that saw technology take a quantum leap to touch virtually every aspect of our lives, and even beyond it may be, from terrestrial to the skies above.

A new MIT plane is propelled via ionic wind. Batteries in the fuselage (tan compartment in front of plane) supply voltage to electrodes (blue/white horizontal lines) strung along the length of the plane, generating a wind of ions that propels the plane forward. Image: MIT

A new MIT plane is propelled via ionic wind. Batteries in the fuselage (tan compartment in front of plane) supply voltage to electrodes (blue/white horizontal lines) strung along the length of the plane, generating a wind of ions that propels the plane forward. Image: MIT

In a first, a plane with no moving parts  no turbines, propellers or even fans  took flight in November.

Developed by researchers at US’ Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the small prototype was powered by “ionic wind”the flow of ions produced by the plane that generates enough thrust to push it through the air for a sustained, steady flight.

“This is the first-ever sustained flight of a plane with no moving parts in the propulsion system,” Steven Barrett, associate professor at MIT, said in a statement.

Another development likely to benefit the aviation industry is an autonomous flying drone that can safely herd birds away from airports.

A team of engineers at US’ California Institute of Technology were inspired by the 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson” when a plane was forced to land on the Hudson River after losing all its engines to a bird strike just after takeoff.

In February, engineers at the University of Maryland announced they have found a way to make wood as strong as titanium alloys.

“Softwoods like pine or balsa, which grow fast and are more environmentally friendly, could replace slower-growing but denser woods like teak in furniture or buildings,” said Liangbing Hu from the University of Maryland.

Technology also found its way into the written word.

A new font, called Sans Forgetica, can help people better remember what they read.

Developed by a team at Australia’s Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), the font consists of individual letters that have omitted segments, forcing the reader to pay more attention.

Another team at Columbia University in the US found a way to hide information in plain text.

Their FontCode allowed for embedding hidden information in an ordinary text by ever-so-slightly changing the shape of characters in a font. The receiver could then decipher the code by noting the font perturbations.

The field of artificial intelligence (AI) has been constantly evolving in the last few years, making its presence felt in all fields.

A group at Shree Devi Institute of Technology in Karnataka explored the idea of using AI to digitally resurrect the consciousness of people, allowing one to conduct virtual communications with departed loved ones.

At a more tangible level, researchers at Google developed an AI application that can predict heart disease by analysing pictures of the retina.

It focuses on retinal blood vessels that might offer hints of a cardiovascular episode. Researchers reported that the app is 70 per cent accurate in tests, roughly equivalent to blood tests.

Another machine learning platform was developed by a team at the University of California – Davis in the US which can verify multimedia rumours online.

The new tool is meant to distinguish between real and rumour by leveraging the semantic similarity of information sources.

The hope is that such applications will help reduce the number of rumour-based online news stories or ‘fake news’.

Another developing field of technology – known as quantum computing – got a major boost this year with researchers reporting the first proof that quantum computers would have a significant advantage over traditional systems.

According to the team at Germany’s the Technical University of Munich, Canada’s University of Waterloo in Canada and IBM, scientists and engineers earlier worked on quantum computer development based on just the belief that the research would eventually pay off in next-level computer systems.

While in the last decade solar and wind energy have seen significant advancements, the problem of storing energy harvests from these sources on cloudy days, or when there is no wind, remains a challenge.

A group of engineers at MIT developed what they described as a “sun in a box”  a renewable energy store for the grid.

Their conceptual system stores both solar and wind power and deliver that energy back to the electrical grid on demand. The system would also be large enough to power a small city during periods when the sun is obscured or the wind is not blowing.

A collaboration between researchers from Cypress University of Technology, University College London, the University of Alabama and Boston University resulted in an investigation of state-sponsored trolls.

By analysing data from Twitter and Reddit, they were able to trace the activities of bad actors over time. They found the majority were from Russia and Iran, and they generally attempted to pose as legitimate users from a host of countries around the globe.

The year also saw the end of Moore’s law – a notion that computing power doubles every year.

A trio of researchers at Carnegie Mellon University noted that the famous Moore’s law has ended and speculated about what might come next to increase the speed of future computers.

Their review includes possible innovations that are likely to make a mark, but they note that some as-yet-unknown technology is required.

Irrespective of what the future may have in store, the year 2018 has ushered humanity towards an era of next-generation technology, demonstrating that there is no looking back in scientific innovations.

2018 has been an eventful year, and here’s our comprehensive list of year ender stories.

Citi Research on 28 December reduced its first-quarter production estimates for Apple Inc’s iPhones and nearly halved expectations on the costliest iPhone XS Max, joining other brokerages in lowering forecasts amid reports of weak demand.

“The material cut in our forecasts is driven by our view that 2018 iPhone is entering a destocking phase, which does not bode well for the supply chain,” analyst William Yang wrote in a client note.

Citi said it expects the company to make 45 million iPhones for the quarter, down from 50 million it forecast earlier. The cut was mainly due to a weak outlook for the iPhone XS Max, Yang said.

The brokerage lowered its forecast for the number of units produced in the first quarter of iPhone XS Max, which starts at $1,099, by 48 percent.

According to a Wall Street Journal report in November, Apple cut production orders for all three iPhone models launched in September.

Shares in Apple’s Asian suppliers and assemblers slid in November after several component makers forecast weaker-than-expected sales, leading some market watchers to call the peak for iPhones in several key markets.

Citi has “sell” ratings on iPhone assemblers Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd (2317.TW) and Foxconn Technology Co Ltd (2354.TW) said it sees Hon Hai as particularly vulnerable, with higher exposure to the new models.

In early December, TF International Securities analyst cut its first-quarter iPhone shipment estimate by 20 percent.

But other analysts remain positive on Apple. Also on Friday, analyst Tom Forte of D.A. Davidson reiterated his “buy” rating on Apple stock and a $280 price target based on a Reuters report earlier this week that Apple plans to begin using Foxconn to assemble some of its newest iPhone models in India in 2019.

[embedded content]

Forte said in a note to clients he believes some of the declines in Apple’s stock in recent weeks has been related to concerns that a trade conflict between the United States and China could hurt the iPhone maker.

Increased manufacturing in India could help reduce tariff concerns around the iPhone, he wrote.

“While Apple has one of the highest exposures to tariff risks, it is also the best positioned to mitigate these risks. Part of this belief was based on the company’s size and ability to both negotiate pricing and terms with its manufacturers and move its manufacturing out of China,” Forte wrote.

In an end-of-year note by Mark Zuckerberg, you’d have thought that after all the drama that Facebook had to face this year, the company CEO, would maybe find it difficult to appear optimistic. But on the contrary, Zuckerberg is happy at how his company has transformed and taken steps to contain the misuse of its platform.

The note can be seen as a bunch of words that give out the message how Mark Zuckerberg is “proud” of his company, about the “focus” of the company and how much the company has progressed.

Cardboard cutouts of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Image: Reuters

Cardboard cutouts of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Image: Reuters

In his post, he might have mentioned that he was “proud” of the company three times, and on the company’s ‘progress’ five times, but not once do you read the word ‘Sorry’. There’s no mention either about the high profile departures this year  WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum to Instagram founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger.

Through the note he acknowledges that the social-media giant has been a medium in spreading hate speech, ‘fake news’ and has intervened in the elections, but the note instead of apologising (again) and maybe being a little empathetic towards its users, seems to put Facebook on a pedestal for all the corrective measures it took.

With Facebook being in news every now and then for some wrong-doing to its users, Zuckerberg has spoken of how in future there will be advanced systems in the world to identify and resolve issues.

[embedded content]

In the post, Zuckerberg mentions how there are now “more than 30,000 people working on safety” and there is an investment of “billions of dollars in security yearly”, but still he says the problem of “election interference or harmful speech…can never fully be solved.”As mentioned in TechCrunch Facebook’s employers have long complained about long hours and low pay and inhuman posts that moderators have to review each day. Zuckerberg might have to take into consideration that maybe the number of staffers may not be enough to fight the battle of violence and abusive content floating on the site.

Also this year Facebook witnessed the departure of its Chief Security Officer, Alex Stamos, but there is no mention of a replacement.

Fake news, spread of misinformation, meddling in elections, privacy breaches are not only the things Facebook has got infamous for, but the company was also in the news for playing a role in Myanmar’s genocide.

[embedded content]

There were questions directly from US lawmakers addressing this issue, but there has been no acknowledgement of it in the note either.

So with Zuckerberg ending his word-post on an optimistic note putting forth a case showing Facebook as a changed and more proactive company, it is time that these words turn into actions.

In an annual ritual that many have come to love, Danish investment bank Saxo has published its year-end list of outrageous predictions for the following year.

The bank’s predictions for 2019 cover a world that is increasingly saying “enough is enough,” Saxo explains as the overwhelming theme of its listicle.

These predictions aren’t official forecasts of any sort, but rather a series of “unlikely but underappreciated” events which, if they were to occur, could throw financial markets into chaos.

Enough is Enough

“This year’s edition has a unifying theme of ‘enough is enough’,” Steen Jakobsen, Chief Economist at Saxo Bank told Trustnet.

“A world running on empty will have to wake up and start creating reforms – not because it wants to, but because it has to.”

[embedded content]

One of the listed prediction isn’t just interesting but also one that could have far-reaching consequences if it really came to be: the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank could turn their back on using Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as its go-to metric for growth in 2019, turning to productivity, instead, as a measure of countries’ growth.

“They [IMF and World Bank] argue that GDP has failed to capture the real impact of low-cost, technology-based services,” Jakobsen was quoted to have said.

“(The two organisations have) been unable to account for environmental issues, as attested by the gruesome effects from pollution on human health and the environment in India and elsewhere around the world.”

Neglecting productivity

For a country truly invested in the health and happiness of its people, Saxo says it would need to produce more for every worker they have than it did so far, making productivity a more interesting measure of national progress.

So far, the world’s governments have been set on using Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a traditional choice of metrics to measure growth. But this has also allowed many world economies to neglect considering or improving their ‘productivity’.

GDP has many advantages and failings, its biggest drawback being that it simply does not capture the real impact of low-cost, technology-based services and isn’t designed to account for environmental issues, which is of significant modern-day importance.

If Saxo’s “unlikely” prediction for the IMF and World Bank to move to productivity does come to be, it could give a far more comprehensive look at a certain economy’s productive capacity over time.

“Productivity is certainly one of the most popular, and yet, least understood terms in economics,” Christopher Dembik, head of macro analysis at Saxo Bank told Trustnet. “Simply defined, it refers to output per hour worked. In the real world, however, productivity is a much more complex notion. In fact, it can be considered as the greatest determinant of the standard of living over time.”

Among some of Saxo’s other predictions for 2019 is a solar flare burst that leads to chaos and inflicts $2 trillion in financial damages to the world’s economies. GE and Netflix going into losses from corporate debts and Apple taking a large bite of Tesla in an acquisition that makes “perfect sense”.

After months of beta testing, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is now getting the last and final beta version of the new One UI. For the uninitiated, One UI is the revamped version of the company’s own Samsung Experience UI and is based on Android 9 Pie.

Samsung has already started rolling out the official version of the UI to Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ users in Germany.

For the Galaxy Note 9, an updated software roadmap revealed that Samsung plans to release the final version of Android 9 Pie for the Note 9 in February 2019, but the beta rollout today suggests it could arrive as early as next month.

The update weighs in at 331 MB and includes a number of bug fixes. Along with that, it also includes elements from the January security patch. This is very interesting considering that Google’s devices are usually the first ones to receive security updates.

In terms of other fixes, the update makes improvements to the Samsung Notes app, which had an issue where it would just cease to function.

It also fixes a problem where users were unable to unlock the screen and turn off the screen at the same time.

In addition to that, it fixed an issue where the search function did not appear in the Dialer and Contact windows. It also addresses a ‘Screen Touch is restricted’ issue and other system UI crashes that popped up.

There is also an improvement to the front/back switch in the camera preview, which some users found sluggish. Also, the changelog says that the update does have a known issue where the home button force touch function does not work if gestures are enabled.

Drones have been a controversial subject almost since they came into existence.

The conversations around drones either tends towards their use in the last big wedding or escalates to military usage in unmanned aerial warfare.

However, there are a plethora of extremely functional and useful ways by which drones can change the way we live for the better.

Drone-768

Drone regulation needs to embrace the fact that drones can be a force for good.

Drones have proven to be game changers in the health-care space – the residents in the island nation of Vanuatu have very few airfields, paved roads or available refrigeration. Here, vaccine availability has been transformed by drone delivery. Applications extend to the delivery of life-saving medicines, blood packets and organs for transplant.

In India, another particularly useful example is in agriculture. Early assessment of crop health, better irrigation practices and even soil and field analysis can only improve agricultural practices across the board. With a number of state governments already using drones to assess and quantify crops and farmlands to try and predict water usage and expedite relief, it is clear that drone applications have more good to offer than popular hysteria would suggest.

However, all of these virtues fall by the wayside when incidents like the ones at Gatwick or HAL airports occur. In both of these cases, unauthorised drones hovering near the runway led to security concerns and disrupted operations. In the case of Gatwick, it resulted in the airport being shut down for 36 hours and hundreds of flights being cancelled, delaying and stranding thousands of passengers shortly before the start of the holiday season.

Drones aren't just weapons or spy tools. They can deliver vaccines and provide much-needed information in emergencies.

Drones aren’t just weapons or spy tools. They can deliver vaccines and provide much-needed information in emergencies.

Examples like these are quickly used to make a case for banning drones citing security and safety concerns. Reasoning along these lines guided the regulation regime around the drone industry in India, which made it prohibitively difficult to for the industry grow or operate over the past two years.

But if we were to take a step back and evaluate – the issue in both of these incidents was not the drone itself, it was the unauthorised operation of drone flights and their use in restricted areas.

For a while now, the perception has been that drones and their abuse were inherently linked and creating a distinction between the two seemed impossible. Fortunately, this is what the new drone regime in India seeks to address.

Drone-720-4

Until recently, drone regulation in India made it prohibitively difficulty to own and operate a drone.

The recently launched Digital Sky platform has come up with a technology platform for permitting and regulating drone flights and controlled airspaces. The innovative NPNT (No Permission No Take Off) system is the key component of this platform. It requires the operator of the drone to apply for permission to fly their drone/s on an online platform. This permission would require details of time of flight, drone specifications as well as the area in which it seeks to fly. The system then immediately generates the permission artefact if all the details sought are accepted.

With this artefact loaded on the drone, the drone will then be able to fly only if the actual flight parameters match the details in the permission sought. Simply put, this system ensures that drones cannot take-off at a time and place the authorities don’t want them to, regardless of the pilot’s intervention or intent. NPNT is designed to ensure safety and security at a very fundamental level so that incidents like the one in HAL and Gatwick can be prevented even before they occur.

The enforcement of this obviously requires a great deal of co-ordination amongst hardware manufacturers and systems providers – not to mention certification agencies and pilot training schools. Indigenous manufacturers and operators, for their part, have taken up the mandate to embrace NPNT and more importantly, Digital Sky.

Initiatives like Digital Sky and NPNT are attempting to create a safe and legal environment for drone operation.

Initiatives like Digital Sky and NPNT are attempting to create a safe and legal environment for drone operation.

Neel of Asteria Aerospace says, “The Digital Sky platform concept is a step ahead of regulations in most countries. It will enable law enforcement officials to easily monitor and identify registered drones flying in a local area through an app on their smartphone. However, the government has to be strict about enforcement to ensure that the drone industry does not suffer at the hands of a few individuals procuring non-compliant drones and flying them recklessly.”

Digital Sky will also have to be a continuously evolving platform that has to not only cope with but enable future developments in drone applications as well.

“The future versions of Digital Sky will enable on-demand flight route generation in a complex environment at the click of a button. Imagine a drone delivering emergency vaccines or picking someone up from a station to save someone’s life or precious time in future,” says Vipul Singh, CEO of AUS.

“The drone ecosystem being a relatively nascent industry is also the fastest growing ecosystem of the India Stack. Initiatives like DICE ensure that the interests of this fast-evolving space are in sync with the greater interests of India’s Digital evolution,” said Mrinal Pai of Skylark. DICE is the Digital India Collective for Empowerment, which is an industry lobby comprising drone makers, digital wallet companies and more.

Born out of the joint efforts of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and in consultation with entities such as iSPIRT, the Digital Sky platform aims to drive private innovations that can create public good.

This new regime is an end-to-end ecosystem created around the simple yet effective idea that a technology-enabled solution can minimise paperwork, provide permission and reduce friction to flight while at the same time strengthening enforcement and increasing security. A regime and platform that proves that challenges are in fact catalysts for innovation.

Saranya Gopinath is the co-founder of DICE (Digital India Collective for Empowerment).

The worst perpetrator of false information is Donald Trump, the President of the United States according to UN Special Rapporteur David Kaye.

An interview published in Digital Rights Monitor, Kaye said, “Governments are real offenders when it comes to disinformation. Governments are putting out false information. In my own country, the United States, the worst perpetrator of false information is the President of the United States.”

Kaye is a professor of law at University of California, Irvine and has also been serving as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Freedom of Expression and Opinion since 2014.

In the interview, Kaye highlighted threats to online freedom of expression and the role that journalists play in bringing fake news to light. What caught most people’s attention was how he described Donald Trump.

Kaye believes that the problems of fake news are understood well by journalists, and proactive reporting about privacy violations is the need of the hour.

The image the 2018 Freedom House report paints isn’t the best — internet freedom worsened in 26 countries, out of a total of 65 countries which were studied. It also pointed out that a significant number of countries were increasing surveillance to fight fake news.

In India itself, the past week saw two notifications from the Government of India along similar lines — MHA notified 10 agencies empowering them to get any information through any computer and MEITY proposed changes to the IT Act to address the issue of fake news with the possibility of breaking encryption for some online intermediaries.

Apple’s high-output USB-C wall chargers are the fastest way to charge MacBooks and iOS devices, but they’re also expensive (especially for the 87W model), and don’t even include the Lightning or Thunderbolt cables needed to use them. Nekteck sent us an alternative — their USB-IF Certified USB-C wall charger with up to 90 watts of power delivery, which sells for under $30.

The first thing we noticed about NekTeck’s 90W charger is that, unlike Apple’s chargers, it’s large and heavy. It also has a long six-foot non-removable cable. On some level, this is a good thing — anyone who has lived with Apple wall chargers knows that their white cables quickly get dirty and are prone to fraying at the ends. Not so with the NekTeck charger’s cable — it’s got a reassuringly thick cable with beefy strain reliefs at both ends, making us think that this charger is likely to survive longer than the more expensive Apple versions. NecTeck points out that this charger is also USB-IF Certified, which means that it complies with the standards set forth by the USB Implementers Forum — and that it will automatically adjust its power output to the connected device.

We tested NekTeck’s 90W charger with a few devices to see how it fared, including a 2018 iPad Pro 11”, Nintendo Switch, and a 2016 MacBook Retina. In each case, it charged the device faster than the stock charger: the new 2018 11-inch iPad Pro’s 7812mAh battery charged in 2 hours (compared to over 3 on the stock charge), the Nintendo Switch’s 4310 mAh battery charged in just under 2 hours and 45 minutes (compared to 3.5 hours stock), and the 2016 MacBook Retina’s 5260mAh battery charged in just 2 hours and 30 minutes. Overall, we’re happy with the NecTeck 90W charger’s performance and build quality. The addition of one or more USB ports would have been appreciated, but extra features add cost, and it’s hard to argue with this price.

Police in Uttar Pradesh will now be able to solve cases faster with an application that has a database of five lakh criminals as well as AI, face recognition and a host of other tech features, officials said on 27 December.

Named ‘Trinetra’ or third eye, it was launched by UP Police chief O P Singh at a conference of senior officers during the annual ‘police week’ celebrations in Lucknow, a senior official said.

The database has been created after bringing together criminal records of the state police, the prisons department and the GRP that guards the railway network in the state.

A senior official involved in developing the app said the database will help policeman on ground by deploying techniques like face recognition, text search, biometric records analysis, phonetic search, artificial intelligence (AI) and gang analysis to “zero in on the criminal” in a quick and targeted manner.

“This app has a database of about 5 lakh criminals of the state and it will provide access of crime files and dossiers to my officers and personnel on the ground in a seamless and reliable fashion. This app is aimed to help them crack a case fast and ensure relief and justice to crime victims,” Singh told PTI.

Explaining the features, the official quoted earlier said a cop at the scene of a crime can use artificial intelligence tools to identify a criminal through their face and photographs, through past FIRs where a person was named as an accused, explore links of a criminal with any gang, scan fingerprints and voice samples and can search the name of a criminal even if it is misspelled.

The app, at present, has been made available to senior police officers on their smartphones and will soon be shared with officials at the police station-level, the official said.

The Director General of Police said a dedicated team of officials will keep the app updated as and when crime incidents happen and it can be used by officials by using a unique passwo

A month after the iPhone XR was launched, 16 percent of iPhone buyers in the US had upgraded from Android phones, implying that the company’s latest and most affordable iPhone model is attracting more Android users than it did in the previous years.

According to a study by the Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, 16 percent of iPhone buyers upgraded from Android phones after the 2018 launch, 11 percent upgraded from Android after the 2017 launch, and 12 percent upgraded from Android before that. You can read the study here.

The CIRP report comes soon after there was speculation that the demand for the new iPhones is weakening and after Apple announced that the company will no longer disclose unit sales.

Mike Levin, the co-founder and partner of CIRP responded to the study by saying“It appears that iPhone XR did serve to attract current Android users. Of course, Apple doesn’t just state plainly its launch strategy. But, based on the pricing and features, we can infer that Apple positioned the iPhone XR to appeal to potential operating systems switchers from Android.”

Besides the flocking from Android to iOS — the study also reveals that with 32 percent sales which is about one-third of the total iPhone sales was dominated by the iPhone XR  within one month of the launch.

The freelance lifestyle is becoming increasingly popular.

As it becomes easier than ever to work remotely due to the growth of high-speed internet and the gradual shift to cloud-based tools, freelancing is more feasible than ever before.
But how should you get started? You need the right hardware, of course, but you can’t stop there — you also need to know how to make the most of it.
Making the switch from a full-time job to freelance work can be challenging (and even a bit scary!) To help you get going, here are five resources that you should check out.

1. Udemy

To become a freelancer, you are going to need a skill to offer. Freelance workers are commonly translators, web designers, copywriters, graphic designers, virtual assistants, or photographers — but you can be a freelance anything these days.
Whatever you decide on, you will either need to learn a new skill or brush up on your existing skills. Books will be greatly helpful, but there are plenty of online resources too.
That’s where Udemy comes in. Through Udemy, you’ll find courses on just about anything (over 80,000 in total), so find a course in your area and top up on your skills.
Think about your niche while you are looking for courses. Instead of aiming to be a web designer, consider a more specialist goal, like being a web designer for dental practices. It needs to be narrow enough to make you a specialist but broad enough that you will find plenty of work.

2. Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer, etc

One of the best ways to get started as a freelancer is to use a freelance marketplace. There are many of these to choose from, but three of the biggest are Upwork, Freelancer, and Fiverr.
Any such marketplace will have its pros and cons. It will take a cut of what you earn from each client, and likely require you to communicate and receive payment via their systems.
But on the plus side, they put you in front of clients who are looking for your skills, so you don’t have to go out and find them. They can be good places to improve your craft and build up your portfolio without worrying about chasing up late payments.
You might decide to stay with them, or you might move on when you start finding your own clients. But for anyone making the switch, they are a great starting place.

3. Facebook Groups

One of the best resources that you can use when you start out as a freelancer (and when you have been working freelance for years) is the vast array of Facebook Groups out there.
There are Facebook Groups for everything these days, and you won’t have to look far to find a group of fellow freelancers in your niche. LinkedIn Groups can also be useful, so you might want to search those too.
Don’t see other freelancers as competitors. Many experienced freelancers are more than happy to share their knowledge and skills. By simply hanging out in relevant groups, you can pick up tips on finding clients, working with clients, improving your craft, and virtually anything else.
They are invaluable, so get involved and ask lots of questions. You might even find that some experienced freelancers have too much work and are more than happy to hand some over to you.

4. Reddit and Freelance Blogs

Reddit, the “front page of the internet,” is another great resource for beginning freelancers. You can find any community here (including fellow freelancers in all niches) as well as some amazing resources.
There are many subreddits to choose from, so search for communities that are relevant to your niche. You might even get involved with some that are popular with your target customers rather than other freelancers.
Get involved, ask questions, answer questions, and become a part of the community rather than just trying to market your services. This is the way to get the most out of Reddit.
Freelance blogs are also excellent sources of information. You will find that there are many that focus on freelancing in general, as well as some more specific to your niche. They tend to bring together information about taxes, marketing, rules, regulations, and other vital elements of the freelance world, so take advantage.
You should also find some websites in your freelancing niche. Do they have communities attached to them? You’ll find that many will have active forums that you can get involved in or use to find information.
Quora is also a great place to search for info. This is the biggest question and answer site on the web, and you can find answers to all your freelancing questions here. If you can’t, post your own questions and get answers from experts.

5. Invest in Essential Tools

Finally, online tools are going to be vitally important for your freelance work. There are many tools available that can make the switch to freelancing a lot easier, and some will become tools that you end up using every day.
To become a professional freelancer, you will need a website, hosting, and a domain name. These are not expensive, and will instantly equip you to leave a more professional impression. You can cheaply create a website on a CMS like WordPress, or save time by buying an existing site and repurposing it. (Better yet, try to buy a business with a blog and a store page — if you want to sell branded items down the line, you’ll be ready.)
Having your own website also means you can send emails from your professional address rather than the free Hotmail account you set up in 2005, which is very important for ensuring that your freelance brand comes across as professional.
Get a Google account if you haven’t yet. Sign up with G Suite, and Google will handle your emails for you. You will also get a larger Drive storage allowance (many clients work with Google Drive these days).
You can also use a range of other tools, from invoicing tools like Zoho Invoice to accounting tools like QuickBooks. Many of these also come with excellent blogs packed full of useful information.

Start Out on Your Freelance Journey

Anyone can be a freelancer, but being a successful freelancer is not always so easy. You need to bring in work from various sources to keep busy, generating leads through your website, social media, cold emails, in-person networking, etc. It’s never advisable to rely on just one source of work.
Make sure to get your website sorted out, and start publishing a regular blog. Share your work through social channels and build communities around your niche. After a while, you may find you can start to drive traffic through these activities.
Don’t forget to read — voraciously. Learn your craft, learn how to budget, and learn how to thrive rather than just survive.
But most importantly, just do it. You learn best through actually working as a freelancer, and there’s only a certain amount you can learn by reading about it. So start working, find clients, make your mistakes, and learn from them. A rewarding freelance career awaits.
